Lorca is a crossbreeding
of towns and cultures to which the present-day
Murcian and Andalusian influence is superimposed.
This reality becomes evident in the variety
and riches of the Festivals and
lorquian traditions.
Some parties have their
origin in acts of God, like the festivities
that agree with summer solstice, Saint John,
or the winter's equinox, at Christmas. Other
ones are related to the agricultural tasks
such as the sow, reap, thresh or wine harvest
that were the base for celebrations related
with protective gods of agriculture and
that at a later time, they were Christianized.
The popular
lorquian culture is almost preserved intact
in the deputations and its celebrations
are a reflection of habits and traditions
of last epochs: the Blessing and auction
of the Waters of souls, the processions
of a patron saint, musicians' dances of
the leather bag with ‘cuadrillas’
in Zarzadilla of Totana; the Picking up
of rosemary and the bonfires the night of
Saint John in Coy; the Christmas' songs
or Christmas bonuses of the ‘cuadrillas’
at La Hoya, Purias, Zarzalico ...
We also highlight the
Pilgrimages that are celebrated,
habitually the days related to the patron
or the patroness saint, at the rural hermitages.
In addition to the religious acts, the dances
of bid or ‘subastaos’ take place.
These dances are celebrated in honour of
the patron of the place.
In like manner, in spring,
the burning of the figures of straw to impede
the disasters of nature takes place. In
Morata and also in Almendricos, two puppets,
the John and the Jane were burnt off at
Saint John's Day. In the city of Lorca,
‘the Judahs’ were also burning
on Easter Saturday , at several neighbourhoods
and streets. The ‘Asociación
Belenista of Lorca’ has recovered
this tradition when burning the Judas at
the Spain square.
